Because charging the battery cause the battery to get warms/hot. A case insulates the iPod so it dissipates heat slower so the iPod/battery will get hotter during charging. A higher temperature permanently degrades the battery faster.

Is there any way you can get around this without taking the case off? It's a tough case that's hard to get off.
