How to upgrade Samsung 840 pro SSD on a Macbook Pro with Optibay
Hi
Just want to share my expirience with upgrading the firmware on a Samsung 840 PRO SSD.
I started by using the files from this site http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html
My setup is a MacBook Pro mid 2010, 8 GB. I installed a Optibay HDD frame and have the SSD (512 GB) as the bootdisk and the HDD (512 GB) as my second drive. My superdrive is placed in an external box.
First I tried to follow the instructions from Samsungs homepage. Made a boot dvd. My mac found the disc, but when I tried to boot it, it just showed me the grey screen with the Apple logo. Then I tried to make it boot from a USB disk. That didn't work either. I went through all the pages in several support forums to check if I did something wrong and ended up by concluding, that the only thing I did different than the ones that succeded with the upgrade was, that I booted from an external dvd.
So.. I got my toolkit and installed my superdrive back into the mac. And that worked. I upgraded with no problems. Som the morale is.. YOU CAN'T DO FIRMWARE UPGRADES FROM A EXTERNAL DVD DRIVE...Come on Apple fix this problem!
Hope I can help others not wasting hours trying to use the external drive.
And now I can see, that Apple is accepting that my SSD has TRIM. Which was the main reason for doing the upgrade.
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), Optibay installation
