Saving albums-pictures on NAS drive?

Hi there,

I bought nice NAS drive sitting on network together with my MACs. It is Western Digital, not Time Capsule. It also serves as media server so I could see pictures or what not on big screen TV.

What would be easiest way to send all albums (pictures) to that network drive? I could do it manually one by one but it is time consuming manual labour. I also includes manually re-creating all folders (albums) in order to stay organized.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2 more iMacs, 3 x MacBooks, MacMini

Select the photos in iPhoto and export to the NAS - see the export options here - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921

Note the Subfolder format option

Subfolder Formatonly shows if you're exporting more than one Event at a time. You can choose to export all the images into one folder, or into a number of folders with the Event Name given to the Folder.

You can not run your iPhoto library on the NAS

LarryHN, thank you for advice. This much I kind of knew from before.

I have about 40 albums in my iPhoto, around 30000 pictures in all of them. Simple exporting as you are suggesting means going into each individual album, selecting all pictures, go through export utility, go into NAS drive > PHOTOS folder, create new subfolder named (eg) Florida Vacation and sending pictures there in JPG format.

That is what i call a lot of manual labour. There must be a better way to send all albums (folders) at once and go read a book, come back later and everything is there?

Not from albums that I know of

If you are exporting events select multiple events - try selecting multiple albums and see if this appears -

This is what I found out:

> iPhoto on this Mac is giving me now beachball and I can't even enter it. I am in process of re-loading iPhoto application. I think it's somehow corrupted now. Have to find DVD and Pacifist utility first

> Exporting from other Mac works fine however it is exactly manual process as I described it. have to create folder by folder in NAS drive and then export specific album to that folder. At least that works.

The library is corrupted.

Try these in order - from best option on down...

1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.

2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.

To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:

Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.

Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop

Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.

Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.

When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.

In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

As it's iPhoto 6 you will need a third party app to automate that export process.

Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.

Terence, you suggested all right things and my problem is solved now! Thank you, you saved me a lot of time and nerves.

Recovery from Time Machine didn't do it. I took file 2 weeks old and it still showed corrupted.

iPhoto Library Manager did it. It took good 5 hours but in the end I have iPhoto that is working again. It didn't import about 400 pictures for various reasons but other 20 thousand made it so I am happy.
