Will image capture see it? You may need a USB card reader
Once you get the images onto youor Mac use the reformat command on the camera to reformat and erase the card
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card -- I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

Larry, up until today, when I plugged in my camera, iTunes launched and the camera was on the desk top. Now, nothing.
and the solution as posted

Have you done those steps?

Try the following:
1 - repair disk permissions with Disk Utility.
2 - boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, launch iPhoto, connect the camera and see if it is recognized.
3 - if it is reboot normally, launch iPhoto and try again.
