Imac 27" 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 white screen on waking from sleep

This has happened about three times now. I bought the latest iMac in December 2012 and have had no trouble except this occasional abberant behavior: Upon waking from sleep, a white screen appears with a progress bar that loads all the way to the last bar and then stops. The computer is no longer responsive to the track pad, mouse or any key on the keyboard. I must shut down the machine and then reboot and things are okay. Nevertheless, it is a nuisance at most and I would like to know why this is happening

This is interesting. The only thing is that the progress bar never gets to the end and the computer never fully wakes from sleep. It just sits there with the last bar grayed out. I have waited up tp 15 minutes for it to continue, but get frustrated and just restart. In any case your reply and the article helped me understand this behavior. I happy for the Europeans, butit does me no good. Thanks.
