Q: What is the best Mac-compatible Alternative to Quicken and why?

I made the jump to Apple desktops when my PC went on the fritz.  I was using Quicken 2013,  mostly for tracking accounts and forecasting spending, but not the higher end stuff like paying bills, tracking investments, etc.

I wanted to ask the group if anyone has experience with a Mac-compatible alternative to Quicken, especially one that imports Quicken qif files.  I'd also like to know what features you like best about said alternative.

(My entry may be a bit vague, so if you need more info to post a response, please ask.)

If I remember correctly Palm Desktop can sync (and/or EXPORT/IMPORT) to Snow Leopards' Address Book & iCal and then after that Mac is updated, you can use iCloud to sync those items to your other Macs.

Do a search for that topic...

After reading your recent post I had already Export vCards from Palm then I Open With Address Book and voila':

AB gives several options incl no Dups, etc..

Great! worked, they're all in there (AB) now.

However -my laptop is Mavericks, but there doesn't seem to be an Address Book ? There are 'Contacts' which only incl a few previous addresses which I think came from Mail or -who know?

Did Address Book change? On my laptop the AB has a circle w a line thru it a la "no fat chicks" from Bloom cartoons [if u r familiar w them].

Maybe there's a newer version of AB for Mtn Lion+ ?

    Something is amiss.

    As u noted -but how?

I am not sure what you mean... no Address Book in Mavericks???  I still use Lion, so I have not crossed that bridge yet...

Mavericks changed the name to Contacts. I Exported Palm Desktop via a name I forget now because once I Imported to Contacts it disappeared -it wasn't vCard [that wdn't work] -something else -in the ether now.

So It went to my Mavericks, iCloud, my iPad, Laptop et al probably my iPod if I get around to opening it.

Contacts is not as handy as Palm in my opinion = Categories, columns, search ease, layout etc, etc..

Thanks for your help -AppleCare had to figure it out and even then they made several guesses before I tried using Palm Export itself (there were two choices: vcard and the one that's gone now except on my cabin PowerPC I'm replacing w my 24").

More than you wanted to know?

    Thanks again.

After the first of the year I plan to switch to "gnucash" unless I find something else in the meantime.  Looks like a bit of a learning curve.  It's free with an open architecture.  I started it but couldn't get the QIF files to transfer right.

I had a similar problem.  I was using Quicken for Mac 2006 on my old (2002?) Powerbook.   When I bought a new Macbook Pro in 2012 it no longer supported Quicken 2006.  Sooo first I bought Quicken essentials and it was terrible!!!  I researched other personal money managment tools to no avail.  So... I partioned my hard drive and cut off about 25GB and loaded my old (10.6.6) Mac operating system onto it.  Then I loaded the old (2006) version of Quicken and uploaded the old qif files.  This works great.  The downside is that I have to log out of OS 10.9.1 and restart in 10.6.6 to get to Quicken.  But I actually don't mind it anymore.  My children can use the computor and I dont have to worry about them accidentally hitting the Quicken icon and messing up my banking registers.

    Citation Driver michaelLAX helped me:

I Downloaded Quicken 2007 from intuit or

    https://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp

    It's $14.99 and easily transferred my Q 2006 to Q 2007 for Mtn Lion/Mavericks

It was a relief -all my files for 15+ years are there. You can order a CD from them instead but they save your download so you can put it on more than one computer.

I had tried Essentials prior and didn't like it at all.

You can create a Password in Q Preferences -kids! so u dont have to parttion/log out/in.

    Hope this helps.

This post discussion has helped me. Used Quicken for years on PC and can't find replacement for my Macbook. Tried IBank 4 and strongly warn everyone to stay away...after I entered all my data in an account (checking), when I tried to open it later the error message was the file was damaged. Tried to reload it and the response was the app was no longer offered in US. So stay away from IBank!

You have two viable options. Run Quicken '07 for Lion and later or Quicken for PC on your machine running Windows.

Thanks kininn.  I received the Quicken for Mac Lion 2007 in the mail today.  Imported my data files and it works great.  Well worth the $20.

I am using Quicken 2012 on a PC. I really want to go the Mac route. Will Quicken for Mac Lion 2007 convert my PC .qif data?

Although I have never attempted to convert from Quicken PC to Quicken Mac, my understanding is that you export each PC account to QIF, open the respective account in Quicken Mac and import that QIF.

I can confirm that Quicken Mac does indeed import QIF files, as I do this manually monthly for each of my credit cards.  There is no chance in heck in a post-Target world (or otherwise) that I am giving Intuit all of my log-on names and passwords for all of my financial accounts!

That is the link for instructions to convert from PC to Quicken 2007 PPC.

The link for instructions to convert Quicken PC to Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) appears to be:
