Q: What is the best Mac-compatible Alternative to Quicken and why?

I made the jump to Apple desktops when my PC went on the fritz.  I was using Quicken 2013,  mostly for tracking accounts and forecasting spending, but not the higher end stuff like paying bills, tracking investments, etc.

I wanted to ask the group if anyone has experience with a Mac-compatible alternative to Quicken, especially one that imports Quicken qif files.  I'd also like to know what features you like best about said alternative.

(My entry may be a bit vague, so if you need more info to post a response, please ask.)

It seems you lose a lot of functionality.

Using Quicken 2007 while waiting for Godot?  What loss of funtionality is there to using an actual existing product vs. one that has not been released yet?

It seems that going from quicken pc to quicken 2007 mountain lion, there are a lot of gestures that do not transfer.

Not sure why you are responding to me with those comments: this thread which keeps getting rebooted from time to time, goes all over the place.

To summarize, the current options are:

    1) Run Quicken PC in some sort of virtualization;

    2) Use Quicken 2007 for Mac; or

    3) Use Quicken Essentials, which is largely criticised on this forum

Waiting for a new product from Intuit is fraught with challenges, if past mileage about Intuit's releases for Mac users is any indication about future products!

not sure if this is the correct place to post, but after reading these pages, I wanted to update the current situation re converting.

There is no option (that I found) to purchase Q2007 for Mac.  I purchased 2015 for Mac ($75) and tried the install.  Instead of all the steps outlined here and elsewhere, there is a conversion tool from Quicken.  After many tries (and Chat help from someone) I (we?) learned that in XP, you need to have a filename for your quicken file that is no longer than 8 characters.  (this is not documented anywhere that I can see).  I was running Q2013 deluxe.  It "failed" the first time, but I think it was converting the file from 2013 to 2015.  Then I ran it again and it converted to a QXF (mac) file.  The file size is about 25% of the QDF (Win) file.  But the install went well and importing completed after about 20 minutes (over 25K transactions since 1988!).  Then it has to import investment data (which is slower, but fewer transactions).

Too soon to rate the product, but looks ok so far.  Will be setting up automatic downloads, etc..  Hopefully!

Important update!  They also have a "free" service that will convert your Windows files to MAC.  I wasn't interested in that option...

I use Quicken 2007 for Mac as well. I can't load 3 of my banks/accounts. Mint doesn't allow 1 of my accounts, but Mint doesn't help me with tax reporting.

I really need an alternative to Quicken 2007 for Mac. Their support for Mac is atrocious.

Seriously. Do 3rd party developers think that Mac users don't pay attention to personal finance?

While I agree about the lack of support, I have no problems with my accounts. Can you explain in more detail the nature of your problems?

I cannot import or download/add information for 3 financial institutions. 2 of those are retirement accounts, and one is a student loan account. I certainly am able to maneuver things for tax reporting, but using Mint, and MorganStanley OneView and JPMorgan tools trying to get a view of investment account performance, debt to asset ratio breakdowns, etc. Typical views for analyzing personal finance.

This level of detail is inherent when I say I cannot add accounts. When you have missing accounts, the picture is incomplete and analyses are useless. These particular institutions are not supported, not available on the list, cannot be added.

(Incidentally, Mint doesn't allow 1 of these accounts)

Let me share with you my experience with Quicken 2007 and see if it improves your situation:

I do not have a need for daily updating of account activity; monthly updating is fine with me.

I personally do not like the "insecurity" of using Quicken to log on to my financial accounts and store the passwords to my complete financial universe!  So, I go to each account's personal website and download a "QIF" file for its monthly activity and then IMPORT that QIF file into that account in Quicken.

Late last year, American Express stopped providing QIF downloads and Citicards somehow changed its QIF downloads so that they will no longer IMPORT correctly into my Quicken file.

I solved this problem with an easy to use utility named, CSV2QIF Convert.  It is available from moneythumb.com for about $35.

I find that most accounts will offer a CSV download; originally developed to import directly into spreadsheet programs.  The utility CSV2QIF does exactly what its name implies: convert an appropriate CSV file into a workable QIF file that will then import into Quicken.

What appears to be quite a hassle, actually works relatively smoothly, once the routine is known.  I attempt to purchase close to 100% of my needs through either my American Express or Citicard and keep check writing to a minimum, which I then add manually to my Quicken checking account.  This method then allows me to have ALL of my monthly transactions in Quicken every month soon after the account's monthly closing date.

Let me know if this procedure helps you with your needs and/or if I can provide any more information for you!

    That's so cool for you.

Does anyone have a viable alternative to Quicken? I'm on the market to buy and would like an alternative.
