My iPhone 5 won't connect to my VW Passatt - any ideas?

So my car has paired nicely in the last with my 2 previous phones, but when I tried to pair my new iPhone it said that it couldn't find any devices. Bluetooth on - check. A friend had the same problem with her Volvo. Is this a common problem and is their a nice easy fix?
