AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

May 20, 2013 5:56 PM in response to mont7471by Lanny,A MacBook Pro version 10.6.8 is not a model number. You have an unidentifired model of a MacBook Pro running OSX version 10.6.8.
Click on the Apple menu's "About This Mac," then press the "More Info" button to identify your Mac.
You should be able to use an external monitor with a MacBook Pro via one of its video outputs with 10.6.8.
Your MacBook Pro is probably too old for AirPlay.
