HP 2430, HP 4300, HP 2420: repeated 49.0E00 service error
I finally tracked down why all our HPs (networked and USB) were locking up when Apple users (Mac OS X.4.x) are printing. It appears to be a bug/feature in Mac OS X.4.x that bangs against a memory limitation in HP printers.
Unlike previous systems, Mac OS X.4.x, sends the entire file name to the printer along with the print job. This is not a problem with Canon RIPs, etc. But long file/print job names crash all the HPs in the office.
Because the print job is spooled, restarting the HPs without clearing the user's spooler(s) results in another immediate crash -- The print job(s) with long names must be deleted from the spooler(s) then the printer must be rebooted. In order to print the job, the original file must be renamed with a shorter file name.
There is no firmware fix for this from HP.
Bad HP! Bad!
There is no way to change the default behavior of Mac OS X.4.x from Apple.
Bad Apple! Bad!
