The serial number is on that computer you used to back it up. If you registered your iPad with Apple online, you could find it there.

It directs you to the "My Support Profile" website. You should see your serial number there!!

My iPAD was also stolen when my colleague carrying it got an accident and was unconscious. The rescurers instead made away with my iPAD which had a lock password and I tried to use the find my iphone app and logged in using my apple account but it was offline. So I will advise you log in using your apple account on the find my iphone and may be able to locate it

Mate, jump on any computer and log into itunes using your apple iD, then you'll be able to see all the registered Apple products you have with their serial number too.

Apple (and no one else) can not assist (with serial number or iCloud) in finding a lost or stolen iPad.
Report to police along with serial number. Change all your passwords.
