Won't stop showing the sad face

I have an old iPod that has worked great up until the other day. I went to turn it on and it shows me the sad face, telling me to go to the support website. I have tried resetting, plugging it into itunes and and forcing it into disk mode but nothing works. I really would hate to have to get rid of it. Any suggestions!?!
