Wifi is not auto connect after resume from sleep

I keep my Mac Book Pro up-to-date with software updates.

I recently update to OS X 10.8.3 (12D78).

Since then when I open my laptop after closing it and put it to sleep the wifi connection does not re-connect automatically.

I have to click on the wifi sign near the clock and select the network to connect to.

How can I make it connect automatically like it used to?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), With Parallels

Wifi problems seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.

However, sometimes any one of the following can help although, unfortunately, not always - in no particular order:

  • Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
  • Change the wifi channel on the router
  • Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
  • Reboot the router

Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion:

Hi Ido Ran,

I recently had the same issue you were having where my computer would force me to manually select my preferred network. I found your thread and read a few other articles online and was able to fix the problem. I hope you have solved the issue by now, but if not this article helped me:http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_to_have_mac_autoconnect_wifi_network.html

Essentially all I had to do was delete my network from the preferred networks list and then ad it back. After this my problem was solved. Hope this helps with your problem.

Had the same issue and finally solved it. After the upgrade to Mavericks our 2 new Macbook Airs stopped connecting automatically to Wifi while the older machines the kids had still worked fine.

Bought a new airport extreme and problem solved. Our Airport Extreme was about 5 years old and was probably not compatible with the new OSX.

BTW this was after trying everything people suggested on this forum and a 4 hour marathon tech support call with Apple where we reinstalled the OSX.

***** to need to spend $200 but glad the problem got solved.

New extreme is also mega fast so its all good.

I was having the same problem after replaced our router. I moved the new network to the top of the list, etc. - and it still didn't work.

The new network had been set up with WPA security, but I finally noticed that for some reason it was listed as WPA2 in my Network Preferences.

I changed it to WPA - and all is fine.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Most home WiFi connections and Bluetooth share the same frequencies, which is probably the reason so many people are having this issue. If you have an 802.11n or a new 802.11ac wifi access point (usually a router) and can afford to go 'n only' or 'ac only' and opt to use the 5ghz range, you will probably find it okay to leave both WiFi and Bluetooth on. I can't test this theory myself, so I'm just leaving off the wireless headphones for now...

Cheers!

This solved my problem:

I had this same issue, i think, after updating to Mavericks on my macbook pro retina. After trying a lot of solutions mentioned here and elsewhere regarding bluetooth and different system settings, i tried something else because nothing of this worked for me.

Logging on my wifi router and changing the bandwidth range from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz, and also changing the security from "WPA/WPA2 personal" to only "WPA personal 2" solved my problem. I have not tried only changing one of the mentioned settings, so not sure which one of them solved it.

My mac now autoconnects right away after sleep and reboot/power on.

Hope this helps.
