Q: Voices on iMac when I log on; must restart to stop

This is a very odd situation.  I have a new iMac.  Twice during the last few days when I wake up the computer to use it, I get the strangest sound.....it is like about 50 people all talking at once!  It is really strange.  I have checked everything: iTunes is not on, there is no obvious source for the sound.  To stop it I have to restart.   I thought it could be the "text to speech' or whatever that is...I have never used it so don't know anything about it.  Thei weird thing is that it is not one voice...it is many.

Has anyone heard of this?  Any idea what it could be?

Iwent to Console and looked under User Diagnostic Reports.  A bunch of them are Dashboard crashes....in fact that is all I saw.  All the reports look the same. Here is part of one:

Looks like the widget that was given you the problems or issues was a widget called web clip.

Might be a widget for audio/video clips from the web?

There were two of them....on on top of the other.  I deleted one, but the other is still there.

I googled webclip and it seems that others have tried to get rid of it and have been unsuccessful.  . I deleted them but the web clip widget is still there. I would like to delete it but cannot.   This is what it is:

Web Clip—Perhaps you visit a part of a particular website often. You can turn it into a widget! In Safari, choose File > Open in Dashboard and select the part of the page you want to turn into a widget. Click Add and Safari launches your brand-new widget in Dashboard. From there you can customize it with a selection of themes. Your new web clip widget is always live, acting just like the website it was clipped from.

    ................

I'm guessing I did this by mistake.  I mentioned above that I found today when Dashboard crashed something that said "audio only on Dashboard."  I posted a screen shot of that above.  When I went to delete it there were about 50 little things all on top of each other.....maybe web clips?....most were from Facebook.  I had to delete them one at a time. I had never seen anything like that before but then I never checked either.  The webclip widget is still there and I can't delete it.  Maybe now that I got rid of all those little clips piled up the problem will be gone??  I see that on Console it is webclip that caused all the crashes from Dashboard.

there are four prefs for Webclip in the Preference file.  Maybe they need to be dumped?

I don't think it would hurt to delete these particular .plist files.

I got rid of all the widgets that I could, deleted all the little pieces from Facebook that were gathered in dashboard and dumped the prefs.  I think the web kit was the culprit as you said because of all the crashes of Dashboard (which I had not connected to the 'voices' problem) and then showing the cause of the crashes being webkit.  I think I have done all I can do....except wait and see if it is fixed.  At least Dashboard hasn't crashed for a few hours and, that, in itself, is progress.

I will post back in a couple of weeks to let you know if this was the solution....or sooner if it is not the solution. When I googled webkit, though, there were quite a few people complaining about it and trying to get rid of it so, once again, I am hopeful.

THANKS TO ALL.....I know no one will be happier when this is solved than all of you.

It has been over a week since I've heard any voices.  I am very optimistic that getting rid of all the webclips in Dashboard  took care of the problem. Im sure some of the clips were audio or video files that were corrupt . I,have not had a dashboard crash either and I was having many of,those.  This cause of the problem makes sense.....many of the clips were from FB and were video. I obviously put them there inadvertently but am watching it to make sure this doesn't happen again.....those voices were driving me right over the edge.  I greatly appreciate all,of you who hung in there with your suggestions.  This was one of those things that required troubleshooting over time....it happened so irregularly.  I never knew about console or activity monitor or dashboard  for that matter, so in addition to getting rid of the voices, I know a lot more about this computer!  Thanks again for your patience and help!
