OMG. this is so irritating. applications take over the whole desktop. hitting esc does not return to normal.
my dock is on always visible. help me get out of this stupid mode of whatever it is in.
also this seems to be accidentally initiated by my wife at some point of internet browsing.
is there a way to premanently disable this catstrophic feature? hate it.

You are in full screen mode. Move the cursor to the top of the window, when the ,menu bar drops you will see two blue arrows on the right. Select those to exit full screen.

Once you've returned all of your apps to normal, and set the Dock to hide, again, create a new account for your wife to use independent of yours.
help macintosh took over the whole desktop!!
