iMac: URL entries right to left: moc.elppa instead if apple.com. Cursor won't stop on pull-down menu options, just keeps flashing by. Text of all docx documents becomes boxes with ? in them. If I reboot, all is fine again.

There is a setting for that: see in Textedit for example: /textedit menu/Format/text/Writing Direction: left or right.
you are just displaying from right to left instead of left to right.
