Big increase in Junk mail

Not sure if this belongs here or in iPad or possibly Lion.

I am getting flooded with spam - ever since I did the following: Upgraded my MacBook Pro to Lion (thereby accessing iCloud more fully); buying a new iPad Mini (increasing my iCloud use). I use Mail on both. I have had the same apple email address for over a decade and that is what I continue to use.

I also have my Mac Pro which I keep running Snow Leopard.

I never was getting the extreme amount of spam like this till the iPad and Lion access to iCloud.

Now, since I use the same email address on all machines, I am beginning to see spill over on my MacPro (Snow Leopard.

I keep increasing Rules on this. I don't know what I can do on the iPad or at the iCloud site level.

I can't image this is a coincidence. After so many years to suddenly start getting inundated with this junk at exactly the same time I began using iCloud via the iPad and Lion on MacBook Pro.

Any suggestions? Thanks

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I don't think the causes you suggest are actually relevant; you've just been unfortunate enough to attract spam at this particular time.

You might like to look at SpamSieve - it's pretty good at dealing with spam after a training period, and it works with iCloud. It's $30, but if it stops the problem you might think it well worth it. I use it and find it very efficient. (I have no connection with this company.)

Thanks to those who added to this, though it only seems to confirm my suspicions.

Roger-thanks for the input and suggestion. However, I can't imagine this is as coincidental as you suggest.

I'm not new to Apple, Mail, email, etc. More significantly, I have had the same Apple email address for about a decade. There has always been an ebb and flow of spam. But this is different, and it began exactly when I started using iCloud (Mail on iPad and Mail on Lion via my upgrade on my MacBook Pro within a week of getting the iPad Mini).

I'm not opposed to paying a fee for a app or service to handle this but I am more interested in dealing with the source rather than the symptom, i.e., using iCloud to pass-thru or sync my Mail program's email.

Surely there must be a way to interrupt, block, divert identified spam or junk rather than doing nothing and allowing it (iCloud) to spread it to my different computers.

I want the ability to set up a Rule, as I do in Mail, (that identifies words or senders and deletes them) which can operate at the iCloud level.

Thanks again and any more feedback?

The iCloud Rules can only block specific addresses, which won't do much good as spammers constantly change (ofetn forged) 'From' addresses. I'm afraid there isn't really much you can do about it - SpamSieve can't prevent the rubbish arriving in the first place but at least it can decant it to a 'Spam' folder so that you won't be bothered by its arrival, and you can just clear that out from time to time.

This is pathetic. No way to create Rules or similar junk detecting, spam deleting on this great new thing called iCloud?

I just opened Mail on this iPad mini and there were 7 messages in a row, each with the word erection in it.

That,s just this morning.

It's really difficult for me to believe or accept that apple has not include such an important and basic function within iCloud.

What's worse is I turned Mail off on the iPad, then went to my MBPS with Lion and deleted all the junk in my mailboxes. Came back to iPad a day later, today, turned on Mail, and bingo, the swarm comes pouring in.

Make a list of spammers addresses and the words you don't want and make the rules, that's how you make rules! The key is identifying what you are blocking.

Thank you for presenting a simple solution. However, I think maybe I did not make tyhis clear enough. I know how to make, edit and use Rules. On all my Macs' Mail apps. I now have an iPad mini, and see no way to create rules with it; or more to the point of my question/Post, I cannot find any option for doing this at the iCloud level.

So for example: I use Mail on my Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and create a rule to delete any email with the word "erect" in the subject or the content. I then do the same on my MacBook Pro running Lion (which uses iCloud). Yet, when I open Mail on my iPad, I see loads of email with the word erect in either the subject or the content.

The key here, obviously, is to create the rule at the source - the source where I access email from any of my Macs. That source would be iCloud, right? (Though not in the case of my MacPro with Snow Leopard).

Make the rules at the server level (Settings>Rules)
