Heidi,

I purchased a smart case as a gift for a relative, at a local Apple store. In a few months it developed the same problem as your case. I took it back to the Apple store and was told there was a 1year warranty which covered manufacturing defects, as long as the product was not abused. I told them that the glue problem was a Factory defect and I wanted a replacement, which was granted to me. Talking to someone face to face does give you more leverage than talking to phone personnel who might be a few thousand miles away. So, if you have an Apple store in your area, you may get better results there.

The glue/ adhesive attaching the back to the front of my iPad Smart Case also failed. I tried Gorilla Glue and Super Glue (I think they are both basically the same) and neither would adequately re-bond the pieces. Finally decided to use needle & thread to stitch all the way around the iPad case edge. This was tedious, but I think it will hold the pieces together ok for a while longer.

Repair/gluing solution: My Smart Case (gray) is going on two years old, so it is out of the warranty, I assume. I experienced the same problem with the case, separating on the connector end and rounding the corner to nearly the middle of the cover hinge. Noticing that the original glue that was used was a clear acrylic type, I tried gluing my case together using Loctite brand Stik'N Seal indoor adhesive (Henkel Corp. component IDH # 1465327; Purchased a few years ago at Home Depot — I don't know if it is still available). It is an acrylic, low odor, contact cement style, high-strength indoor adhesive.

Using a toothpick, I applied it liberally to the surfaces of both the top and bottom, in the same areas where the previous glue was (after removing as much of the old glue as I could, which wasn't much because it was stuck on there pretty good). Following the gluing directions, I applied it, waited for 5 to 10 minutes, then pinched the two pieces together. I used a whole bunch of spring paperclips to hold the pieces together and in place; however, finding a different, smoother clamping method, which applies even/smoothe clamping pressure along the whole gluing surface would have produced a more professional repair — my case has a few permanent, slight ripples where the glue congregated in the gaps between the clamps, etc. (Chip clips might work better because they are wider than the spring clips that I used). With the clips in place, I used a small screwdriver to scrape out any overspill blobs that were in the inside (under the top lip), so that they wouldn't get in the way of the iPad fitting properly. This worked well. Note: When applying the glue, I would rather put on a little too much and clean off the excess, rather than not apply enough and have the bond weakened and fail prematurely. Clean up is fairly easy with this glue.

After a few hours, I removed the clips and cleaned off the overspill on the outside edge with a thumbnail — it scrapes off fairly easily. The instructions say that the glue is fully cured in 24 hours. It is been a little less time than that, but it seems to be holding as strong as the original glue. So far, so good. Time will tell if it holds with normal use. I am using the case as I write this.

PS: I am just an iPad user. I have no affiliation with the above mentioned glue manufacturer, in any way. 🙂
