iMac 27 2013 - Replacement of original RAM?

Hi, I'm going to buy an iMac 27 within a couple of days.

My question is: I'm going to make a minor upgrade of the memory. Preferably I want 16GB of RAM.

What RAM is best suited? Kingston? And let's say I buy 8 GB of Kingston RAM, can I install it next to the 2x4 original Apple RAM?

Or do I have to remove the original?

Thank you

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I recommend to buy the memory at OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L Kingston memory might work, but to prevent problems, buy Crucial or OWC memory, because Macs are special about memory and you may have some problems.

You can install memory alongside the original memory that came with your computer. It won't damage anything and the computer will work correctly

Hi Mendel,

Thanks for the answer.

I'm not resided in the US but in Denmark, so I'm not sure if I can get my hands on the OWC memory.

But, the solution would then be the original 2x4 GB Apple RAM and then 2x4 GB Crucial memory? And that should work perfectly?

OWC ships internationally however you probably can find Crucial RAM less expensively in your country. iMacs tend to be sensitive to the type of RAM installed, if you do decide to get Kingston DO NOT purchase their Value RAM brand.

Crucial RAM will not work in the late 2013 iMac running Mavericks. I made the mistake of ordering RAM from crucial. We tried extensions FDD and FED which caused non stop kernel panics (page faults and invalid memory access). We tried extension FJD and that caused the iMac to freeze. Finally got to the second level tech support and the representative said that they are getting a lot of returns on this RAM because others are experiencing the same. I recommend avoiding Crucial and buying Muskin RAM. The reason being that the Muskin RAM that I cannabilized from our mac mini seems to work just fine wherease the Cruciall memory does not.
