Is there anyway to directly link to a folder for pictures other than iPhoto?

I am trying to access my photos that are saved and organized in folders, but within the program I can't seem to access aything but iphoto and Photo booth. I don't use either out of preference but can't seem to figure out how to get a drop down of my photography folder there. Any ideas?
