Just today this icon appeared in the inbox section of my mail drawer. A triangle with an exclamation mark inside I think, and when I clicked on it the prompt reported that a connection had failed and that my IMAP server appears to be temporarily out of service. What does this all mean for incoming and outgoing mail? What is an IMAP server and can I fix the problem on my end? Will this get through?
I ran an NDT test and the up and down megs are flowing smothly and I am still online.
It shouldn't mean anything for outgoing mail since the incoming mail server and outgoing mail server for an account are different.
If the error message indicates the IMAP server appears to be temporarily out of service, this indicates this account is an IMAP type account.
Is the account not an IMAP type account and is this account provided by your ISP used for connecting to the internet or other?
Checking your internet connection has nothing to do with an incoming mail server for an account being temporarily out of service even if the account is provided by your ISP. If this account is provided by your ISP or regardless, you can be online and have internet access but an email account's incoming mail server can be down temporarily due to scheduled maintenance which is usually performed late at night or during early morning hours.
More than likely this is not due to scheduled incoming mail server maintenance but the incoming mail server experienced a problem and is not currently available.
Try using Get Mail and if this does not work, contact your ISP or email account provider for this account to check if they are having incoming mail server problems.
Get mail does not work. In the Mail Preferences/Account Information window it says Account Type: .Mac. Verizon is my ISP and as far as I am concerned only handles the connection. My account is with Apple.
I'll contact Verizon and also Apple Care Support. Thanks for your time.
Oh. You know the only times I learn a lot about the inner workings of my Mac is when something goes wrong and I spend hours researching it all. However, since the **** thing is so reliable my knowledge is limited.
