Sharing of network drive not working

Im having trouble accessing a shared external drive connected via usb to an iMac

in the network.

I can see the harddrive over the network but if i want to access it i get

a "operation can't be completed because the original item for "ext hd" can't be found"

If i share a folder on the Mac itself I can access it from another mac and PC over the

network but for some reason that same process doesn't work when it's a

external harddrive being shared.

I've noticed that this is a very common problem on mountain lion.

Has anybody found a solution for this?

Thanks in Advance

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

These instructions are to be carried out on the file server.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:

ls -@Oen /V* | open -f -a TextEdit

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).

A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

I did tick the smb in the Sharing preferance pane.

I setup an account on the file server called shared which the other users will

use the access the files. There is a permission for everyone to read and write

to the verbatim hd.

I can share anything on the internal drive of the mac server and I can

access it on both the macs and pc's in the network, but when I share

anything on the external I get the "operation can't be completed because the original item for "ext hd" can't be found" error on the mac and "I don't have permission to access that folder" on the pc...

The technicians there connected an external hard drive of their own connected it via USB to a macbook. They shared the harddrive and tried to access it from another macbook configured on the same network.

They can see the harddrive but they can't access it and get the same error I got which is "operation can't be completed because the original item for "insert drive name here" can't be found"

Like I said previously. If I share any folder on the internal harddrive it works perfectly but not when I share an external harddrive connected via USB I get the error.

It is a serious problem and I haven't found anyone who has solved this and that's why I came here...
