I have recently got an Iphone 4s and I have noticed that when I am receiving messages through iMessage that I dont receive any notification.
Is there a way this can be turned on?

Settings>Notifications>Messages>Show iMessage Alerts From...what do you have checked here?
Is the sound volume turns up?
Check Settings >
Notifications > Messages > Text Tone
Sound > Text Tone
I had "Tri-Tone" selcted, but it only seems to work when its on a text message rather than an iMessage.
Yes, I checked the sound volume as I thought it was turned down, but it is up very loud.

That should make no difference, any SMS or iMessage should trigger the same sound.
Have you tried a Reset? (press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see Apple logo, then release).
