May 23, 2013 9:38 AM in response to MRBarrett27by Eric Root,★HelpfulTry going to System Preferences/iCloud, uncheck the Notes sync, and then check it again.
Write a test Note, give it a short time to sync with iCloud and then check iCloud to see if the test note is there.

May 23, 2013 9:50 AM in response to Eric Rootby MRBarrett27,Okay, that worked but does't recover the lost note. Could that be related to the fact that I still have an iMac with Lion that also accesses the same iCloud account? If so would updating to Mountain Lion fix that?
Thanks
Mike

May 24, 2013 8:57 AM in response to MRBarrett27by Eric Root,★HelpfulThat was only meant as a test to see if there was a recurring problem or if the lost note was a one time oops.
I doubt the iMac is causing the problem because I sync notes with my Snow Leopard partition and an iPad and have not had any problems except those caused by 'fat finger' syndrome.
Hopefully, some one smarter than I am can tell you where to look for the lost note. This reply should get the discussion bumped up.

May 24, 2013 9:39 AM in response to Eric Rootby MRBarrett27,I suspect that I deleted it on my iMac because it is part of the Mail program in Lion.
I like to keep my inBox clear so I may have deleted it there. I'm going to try archiving the note on Lion in Mail to see what that does in iCloud and on my Mac Book Pro.
Thanks.

May 24, 2013 11:27 AM in response to MRBarrett27by Eric Root,There is a way to keep Notes out of your mailbox because I was able to do that on my Snow Leopard partition.
Under Notes there was an iCloud and an On My Mac option. I was able to make On My Mac as the default account for Notes. The iCloud Notes are still there and I can read them by selecting that account in the sidebar. I think (please note the think) I was able to do this by selecting Notes in the sidebar and I was able to select Default Account or something similar under one of the menu items.
I can look tonight when I reboot into Snow Leopard.

May 24, 2013 12:07 PM in response to MRBarrett27by Eric Root,Scroll down to Notes - tells you where to look and that a restored Note will be deleted where connected to iCloud. Guess it is worth a try.

May 25, 2013 9:52 AM in response to Eric Rootby MRBarrett27,Archiving a note in Lion makes them vanish the next time I open notes on my Mac Book Pro. Putting the note back in the inBox on Lion has no effect.
Eric, your directions to keep notes out of my mailbox in Lion are unclear to me??

May 25, 2013 2:19 PM in response to MRBarrett27by Eric Root,Link that I forgot to post in my last post - will only work if the note was backed up by Time Machine.
If you can find the deleted Note, I would uncouple Notes from iCloud, restore the Note, copy it, reconnect to iCloud and create a new note, pasting the copied note into the new note.
Sorry for the confused directions. In Snow Leopard Mail under Notes, I have iCloud Notes and On My Mac Notes (which is empty). I can't remember how I made On My Mac the default, but it does keep the iCloud Notes out of my inbox.
After losing a note the same way you did, I created On My Mac Notes in the 10.8.3 application and I copy (using option key) all new notes to On My Mac before quitting the application. A backup of sorts.
Hopefully this is clearer.

May 25, 2013 4:13 PM in response to MRBarrett27by Kurt Lang,I suspect that I deleted it on my iMac because it is part of the Mail program in Lion.
That was Lion. Assuming you're now using Mountain Lion (that's the forum you posted this in), Notes is now a separate app. It's no longer tacked onto Mail.

Mar 22, 2016 8:13 AM in response to Eric Rootby bj mobile al,I know this is 2016 and a different operating system, but I also had the problem of no access to my NOTES app where I daily update a note for monthly expenses. The app would not load on the screen so I could access the entry point. And the window which opened was mostly comprised of iCloud folders that were grayed out.
So, I did the System Preferences, unchecked NOTES in the sync, and then rechecked it again. I then click NOTES in my dock (on an iMac running ElCapitan) and voila, there appears the entire list of accessible NOTES, and among them my Expenses note as well. It was NOT grayed out, so I am now able to make new entries.
Your suggestion still works three years later. Thank you.
