The iPhone's backup is in a SQLite database format. Finding the backup by itself will not recover anything. You need a utility that can read and extract select data from a SQLite database format.

I have an utility to read the files. But I need to find the file to open so it can read it
in itunes edit - preferences - devices - it will show you when your last backup was created. YOu won't be able to view the contents.

No, you need an application specific for interpreting the fields in the DB. I use DigiDNA's DiskAid. Free with limited functionality, free for students, teachers and educational staff.
