Q: Mail not automatically checking

For the past few weeks my Mail has intermittently stopped automatically checking. Sometimes it does and then I might be an hour or so without any mail so I check manually and there will be about five or six messages.

I've tried changing the preferences on and off but I can't think what else I can do.

Anybody any ideas, please?

I have the Activity window open all the time now and I have noticed that although it does not check for new mail as per the settings in its preferences, Mail checks on launch and when my Mac wakes from sleep.

My girlfriend has an almost identical MacBook Pro with the same versions of Mavericks and Mail but does not have this problem at all.

But I don't get it - surely it's just a simple case of the Mac telling the Mail app to virtually click the 'Get New Messages...' button at the interval in settings, isn't it?

OK, well I'm not sure what the 'Automatically' setting is all about but I'd be happy if the old fashioned clockwork system worked.

I was going to share an Applescript which somebody else with this problem had acquired which triggers Mail to check every five minutes (configurable) but I am cautiously optimistic that the latest Mavericks update (10.9.3) may have fixed the problem. Mail seems to be checking itself when visible, I am just waiting to see if I get new mail when Mail is hidden.

Ditto Gardener, I've gotten to the point where I count on my phone to notify me that I have new mail.

When it dings I know that I need to quit and restart Mail on my laptop so i can see the newest message.  So frustrating!

This seems like a gaping oversight and a no brainer of a patch.  What's the hold up?

While I don't have a solution to offer, I wanted to post here that I am experiencing the exact same problem and symptoms as you.

I have two mail accounts set up in Mail on my MacBook, both IMAP, and after a while, neither one gets checked. Like you, if my iPhone dings, then I know to restart Mail on my MacBook so that it can fetch new messages.

Mailbox -> Get All New Mail doesn't work, and I have set preferences to "Check for new message: Every minute." (It used to be "Automatically" but that didn't work either.)

    adding my two cents here.

I started seeing this problem in March of this year (2014). When my computer came out of sleep, mail would not automatically start checking for email. If I clicked the check mail icon, it would check and then would continue checking at the interval set in preferences. Nothing I did in preferences fixed this.

I saw one post that a time difference between the computer and the modem could be causing the problem. So I checked my D-Link router and my comcast modem and the time was set at pacific standard time. But my computer displayed pacific daylight time. Hmmm... this problem started in march, when the switch from PST to DST occurred.

I was able to force my router to daylight time, but couldn't figure out how to change the modem's time setting. Anyway, that didn't seem to help.

Last week I traveled and when I connected my laptop to the hotel's network, PRESTO, mail started working. That is, it automatically checked for mail when it woke. And, even more mysterious, now that I'm home, my laptop is once again checking for mail automatically.

Not a solution, I know, but perhaps it provides a clue to somebody.

I really do think that Daylight Savings Time has something to do with it, but maybe that's because I hate Daylight Savings Time.

I got the same problem (using Gmail). Any fix for this would be great!

Hello!  It is 2016 and I still have this problem.  Any new solutions out there?

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one. Please post in the OS community that corresponds to the OS you are using.
