Go to messages then messages-preferences-messages then click "set font" and choose the desired size. You need to do this twice, once for sent and once for received messages.
I have tryed that. I am able to select the font for the incoming messages but the box to select "set fonts for my messages remains grayed out.
Go to messages and try using cmd+ (literally the plus sign). Or go to view-make text bigger.
I figured it out finally, If you change the "background color" from Automatic to a color you select. The change font button is then selectable. Thanks
Go to Finder to System, Preferrences, advanced, select font size.
Hi JeriB,
Unfortunately for the Messages app that answer is incorrect.
The actual method is to change the Background colour to the Text (normally the Balloons) and then you can change the Font and it's Size and even colour the text itself.
(As the others have posted.)
Some colours don't work together.
Broadly speaking it is best to keep to printing ideas - Light on Dark or Dark on Light - but of course there are exceptions.

It works for me if I go Format > Show Fonts, then change it there.
Hi Lootman7,
That works per letter or character of phrase per each iMessage (or other Message) within the app.
Pic with sync back from iPhone (which in fact proves it is just the server sending it as if from the iPhone as the iPhone can't do this)
You will notice that some options don't work that well.
Also you cannot change the background colour this way.
