Why won't Genius accept my Apple ID?

I put in the ONLY Apple ID i've ever had, which currently works to buy music and download apps, but when i try to turn Genius on (which I've never used), there is a message that says "You must complete the entire form." The only two remaining options are an AOL ID or "create a new Apple ID" which of course I don't want to do since that will create huge confusion.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Are you signed in to your account in iTunes?

You can also try to signe out of your iTunes account, rebbot and log back in to your iTunes account.

I finally figured this out. When you type in your apple ID and press continue, it switches the field right below the user id, to say Password.... even though directly to the left is the radio button for AOL user id. So confusing. So type in your normal password and you are good to go!
