If you are saying your MBP was immersed in water for an hour... it is unlikely to work.

But would not recommend turning it on.... instead take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Repair centre and have it evaluated.

It's done for. Even if you ever manage to dry it out completely and get it to run it won't for long because of oxidation and corrosion of the metal and electronic parts.

My advice is to take the storage drive out of it and use a SATA to USB adapter cable to either a new Mac + Migration Assistant, or a Windows PC with MacDrive installed to get at your files.

My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

If you have a backup of your data already, then no need, just toss the machine into the trash, take it apart to look at the pretty parts or take it to Apple for recycling.

If your having trouble keeping a computer in safe physical conditions, your likely better off on a inexpensive Windows PC instead, this way you just buy another one.

I have several other Linux netbooks just for that purpose, designed to be used and abused if the situation calls for it.

Most commonly used backup methods

There's always a chance, though it would be an extremely slim chance in this case. Water can work its way into a lot of places if the machine was submerged for more than an hour, and it will take quite a while to be entirely sure this machine is fully dry. Plus water is mildly corrosive, especially if it is something like pool water with a lot of chlorine in it.

If there's any chance of your machine working at all, it needs to dry thoroughly before you try to turn it on. And if you don't have any backups of your data, the computer's integrity takes an immediate back seat to making sure you can recover your data. As ds store suggests, you should remove the drive and install it in an external enclosure, then copy the data to another drive using some other computer. If the drive is already dead and you don't have backups, your only option will be a very expensive recovery service like DriveSavers. Expect to pay somewhere in the three to four figure range.
