Only the 27-inch iMac and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external screens > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302


You can't connect your Mac mini to your MacBook to use it as an external display. However, you can use a third-party app like ScreenRecycler, that will allow you to use your MacBook's display with your Mac mini but it uses the network to share your screen
