Restored my iPod nano 6th generation: can’t get it to sync with iTunes

Restored my iPod nano 6th generation: can't get it to sync with iTunes. I got the rotating arrows icon that indicated it was syncing but nothing got synced. Still no content on the iPod. When connected to iTunes, the iPod screen says 'Connected: Eject before Disconnecting'. Just updated the iTunes to the latest version. Suggestions for putting content back on my nano?
