sync ipad with new computer

I have an new laptop and want to sync it with my iPad. I've backed it up to my old laptop and transferred my iTunes library to the new laptop (at least the music). How do I sync the iPad with the new laptop without having to start all over again with setting up the iPad, all the apps and everything? I'm nervous.

If you have apps, camera roll photos, books and other content in the iPad that are not in your iTunes library, you need to transfer that content into iTunes. You need to start by Authorizing the new computer if you haven't done that yet, then you can transfer purchases, backup, restore from the back and sync with iTunes - all on the new computer.

This user tip explains the procedure in detail and should be quite helpful. However, if you did transfer the entire iTunes library into the new computer, you should be able to sync right away. It will be beneficial to you if you take a look at this first.

Dont let the fact that it was written for an iPhone worry you, because it works the same way for an iPad.

It sounds like you've done some things in an unusual order.

It seems to me the straightforward order would be now that you have a new laptop, to first transfer all the items you would like to keep (including your iTunes library) from your old laptop to your new laptop. If your new laptop were a Mac, you would even be given a tool (Migration Assistant) to do this.

Then, you would sync your iPad to the iTunes which would now be located on your new laptop.

But it sounds like you didn't do this. You didn't complete "moving in" to your new laptop yet.

So try completing the "moving in", then sync your iPad to the new laptop. By the way, you should deauthorize the old computer in iTunes and authorize the new one before syncing.

Thanks. I''ve read that post. Will that will restore the iPad to the way it was before with the apps and folders in place?

When I copied the old iTunes library over the songs showed up in iTunes but they could not be "located". I ended up copying the music library over through Home Sharing. What will that procedure do to the music in the new library? Does it put in duplicates of the songs?

Will all the photos I have on the iPad will be saved? The books etc can be copied easily.

That should not create duplicates as far as I know since the music has no need to transfer and is already in your iTunes library - at least I think that's how it will go.

When you backup the photos should go into the backup and when you restore from the backup, that should transfer the photos back to the iPad.
