We need to know more. to get an idea what might be wrong. What is your iPhoto version, your MacOS X version, and what exactly happens, when you try to launch iPhoto? Is there an error message or a crash log?

since I updated the iMac software

What did you update? iPhoto or other programs as well?

Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Can you?
