System preferences is missing and how to get it back.

hi. i am using the old version of mac os v 10.5.8 and recently my system preferences had already missing. how can i get back the system preferences since i can't change my desktop background. then, how to change the v 10.5.8 to the latest one? do i need to pay or just downloaded it? how much it costs? and i would like to upgrade my microsoft office to the latest one as i can't do my work well with the old version of 2004 microsoft office. i hope there is some response and solution from u. thank you.

1. You need to buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store. Its cost varies by country.

2. Buy a newer version of Office or switch to a free product such as OpenOffice.

System Preferences should be in your Applications folder. Open a Finder window, click Go in the top menu bar, then Applications. Click and drag the System Preferences from there back to your dock. Alternatively, you can always access System Preferences by clicking the Apple logo in the top left corner.

Acquire the newest version of Microsoft Office here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac

According to Microsoft's system requirements page Office 2011 will work on OSX 10.5, but you should definitely consider upgrading your operating system to 10.6 as Niel suggested.
