time machine only shows current version

I updated last week to 10.8.3 from 10.6.8.

Went to Time Machine to retrieve an earlier version of a Word file I'm working on, and every file that I can access in Time Machine thorughout the day or from yesterday is identical to the current version. The bars on the right are alternativing gray and purple, too.

I was hoping to retrieve an earlier version of the same file. Is this possible?

The purple items represent backups on your external disk, Time Capsule, or network location.

The gray ones are the Local Snapshots on your internal HD. Sometimes restoring from them seems to get the wrong version (I thought that bug had been fixed, but have seen a couple of posts like this today).

Try restoring from one of the purple ones.
