How do I close a site without quitting Safari and a few other things.

With my other computer there was a place to click out of a site. I can't find anything that does that on this computer. I have to go to Safari and quit it and then go to another site. I can't see Safari, History, etc without going above my bookmarks and clicking. What am I doing wrong?? Any help will be most appreciated.

Another thing that I can't get rid of the reader. I try to click Reader and its not highlighted or if it is I still can't close it.

I have a MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.5 with 2.4GHz Intel Core i7.

The last thing is that I can't seem to download Java and get it to work. I downloaded the latest edition. Made sure the boxes were checked and still no Java. I know there are several things here but I thank anyone in advance who can help with all or any.
