It's been several months since I have this problem. My nano couldn't contact update server every time, it won't even let me sync the musics. I tried every thing on the forum, trouble shooting and it still didn't hlep me (include hosts file, USB driver, and program security... all of them). HELP!!! it bugs me so much. I treid it with two different computer, and my iPad is working great with both of them, and all of them, of course, have up to date itues.

I found an article about this very error message named iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1814.
iPod:
"iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the Internet. Make sure your Internet connection is active and try again."
Internet access is required to download iPhone, iPad, or iPod software updates. However, if you are able to connect to the Internet with your preferred web browser and you can access the iTunes Store, see the solution below to resolve this issue.
There are 2 sections with resolutions, depending on the version of the OS you are running.
