delete imported photos

Why can't I delete photos I imported onto my ipad using iTunes? I can select the photo which shows a white tick on a round blue circle, but the delete button is a dull red colour as if it's no active and there is NO trash can. I would think Apple would have made it easier to delete photos. I have been able to delete a TV movie and even a book. I would like to free up more space for other things. Any advise would be appreciated as I'm NEW to the iPad Mini...well new to ALL technology.

iPad, iOS 6, ipad mini

If photos were synced from your computer then they can't be deleted directly on the iPad, you will need remove/de-select them from where you synced it from on your computer and re-sync.

Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from on your computer and then re-syncing.

If you want to delete all synced photos then you can either select and sync an empty folder, or try Settings > General > Usage > Photos & Cameras (under the 'Storage' heading), and then swipe across the 'Photo Library' line - that should give a Delete button, which should delete synced photos (though I haven't tried it).

This is a moronic feature by Apple.

I am travelling for 5 weeks from hotel to hotel relying on wifi for internet access for my iPad.

There are no computers to use to access iTunes.

I bought a wifi hard disk as a back up for the multitude of photos I have taken both by the iPad and my camera.

So the idea is to load from the SD card to the iPad, transfer to the HDD and/Dropbox and then delete from iPad, leaving the original copy on the SD card and a back on either or both the HDD and Dropbox.

I can backup and delete photos from the camera role.

I can import the photos from the cameras SD card using the apple dongle to my iPad but these do not become part of the camera roll.

I can then back up to either or both the wifi hard disk or Dropbox

BUT, once I have backed them up I can not remove them from the iPad.

The result is that the iPad got fuller and fuller, I had to delete all my music, all the videos I had loaded to watch when there was no English TV until my iPad got too full so for the last couple of weeks there has been no backups at all except for camera roll to dropbox.

I think the problem is iCloud. http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-switch-off-icloud-photos-2014-9

Here's how I finally got rid of 5,000 photos on my iPad. I won't go into great detail because iTunes seems to change every week and iCloud remains a complete mystery to me.

1. Turn off everything to do with iCloud on your device.

2. Do the same on your Mac.

3. Open iTunes and select your device. Click on "Photos" and then go to the synch screen. Ask it to sync but only pick 1 photo - then click sync.

4. Boom, everything disappears from your device (I had to shut down and then reopen my iPad.

HEY APPLE - how about a big device button that says "DELETE LOTS OF STUFF AT ONCE"?
