Try this.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
alas -- tried this now and I get no apple logo --- when I press both it goes through a couple of different flickering screens and then goes black.... Think I might need to take to Apple....but I'm on the road overseas for another couple of weeks......;-(
Well I think that the next step would be to restore the iOS software but you really want to do that with your own computer, and no matter what, you do need a computer running iTunes in order to restore the iOS software.
Actually, it seems like it could be a hardware issue and you can't do anything about hardware problems. A trip to an Apple Store would be a good idea, when you get home and have the opportunity to get to one.
