How Do I make my zip file smaller?

I have a few jpeg files (scanned in) that I need to send in an online application form (and it only accepts zip) and it won't send anymore than 2mb and the files compressed are 6-8mb - can I make this zip file any smaller? Please help.

Mac OSX, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Cropping off un-interesting border area before you compress would reduce the file size slightly. But using the exact compression method you are currently using, you would have to throw away 3/4 of the pixels to get an 8MB file down to 2MB.

The other option, as others have indicated, is to move to a deeper (and loss-ier) jpg compression and sacrifice some resolution for file size.
