it **** well should link up properly.
however, (and this is just me being a fool for the more expensive models with more buttons and switches) if you have an extra thousand to mess with why not check out the higher end model the HVR-M25 , now that seems to be beast of a machine. either way you have your firewire i/o and you have you lan-c control option and i think the only difference between the m15 and the dsr 11 is the fact that it is hdv compatible with of course the options to still downconvert to sd... everything should be fine with your transition and yea... using the deck to save your Z1 is best. no i am not a sony sales rep... take care and good luck with your purchase. things should be fine.

I have a supplementary question about this unit - maybe someone can shed some light? :

When:

- the M15E is connected via Firewire,
- the M15E is in HDV mode,
- FCS 5.1.1 is displaying/editing an HDV sequence, then

FCS now shows new options on the View:Video Playback menu: viz:
"HDV (1440x1080) 25 fps" and
"HDV (1440x1080) 30 fps" - but these are greyed out on my ageing G4 Dual 1.42GHz.

However - does this mean, when I have a more powerful Mac, these two greyed out options might be enabled and FCS might be able to send an HDV stream down Firewire to the M15E, to record/display, or more importantly: monitor via the component outputs? (like the DSR-11 did with SD?)

Thus allowing realtime preview of HDV on a monitor whilst editing (albeit from some much faster future Mac one day, capable of generating HDV MPEG-2 on the fly)?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Well, at the moment, I downconvert in the deck, and capture/edit in SD DV-PAL-Anamorphic - simply because I've no way to monitor HDV during the edit on a proper monitor.

I would hate to edit in HDV "blind" and then convert to SD MPEG-2 with Compressor and THEN find out I had colour/interlace/speed/effects problems, etc, etc, that monitoring on a proper interlaced monitor would have caught.

But hey! - you've hijacked my thread!! :-D

My question remains: will the M15E - with a faster/future Mac - be usable to monitor HDV out of Firewire, since FCS seems to offer HDV output down Firewire (but currently greyed out).

hi, Sorrry about the hijacking but i see no reasson that you won't get a HDV output down firewire the only thing I see is that the Audio is blanked out or are you looking at some thing diffrent. any special reason for going to ANAMORPHIC. would that be because of the framsize of HDV?

Would you like to expain why you would be blind if you are using a monitor that is broadcast quilty but not HDV as I have a new jvc moitor on its way .should i go for a hdv monitor/hdv tv instead.

Can you get HDV down FireWire during the edit? I can't. 😟 I always understood that current Macs aren't fast enough to generate a HDV MPEG2 stream on the fly from the timeline.

"Anamorphic" SD DV, as the HDV is downconverted to true 16:9 SD widescreen by the deck before capture.

"Blind" as I'd want to see full res, interlaced HD output during editing, to have any confidence that what I was doing during the edit was going to look OK in the finished product.

If you're getting an SD monitor, I don't understand where you will be doing the downconversion from your HDV timeline to display on an SD monitor. Clearly an SD monitor won't be able to show you HD(V) at full res.

Whether it's OK for every other aspect of monitoring (colour fidelity, interlacing effects, speed changes artefacts, etc) - I suspect not - but do post your experiences here when it arrives.
