So I recently wrote an AppleScript to control Spotify (tell application "Spotify" to playpause) with my Apple EarPods. But unfortunately, that will only make Spotify playpause. I was wondering if there was a way to modify my script so that my active/most recent media player will playpause (like "tell system to playpause"); similar to how on iOS clicking the EarPods will control my most recent media app.

I'm not sure if there is a short cut for the F8 key, but the space bar works in iTunes, QuickTime Player, and MPlayerX. So, you can try this:
tell app "System Events"
keystroke space
end tell
Not sure how you're running the script. Your current media player needs to be frontmost. Try testing it first on your various players.

But then my app would have to be in the front.
If I could tell it to press F8 that would be awesome. But I don't know how to do that.
Edit: and this does nothing. I don't know why, though.
