i can't empty my trash

i have been unable to empty my trash for about a week. this is the error message i get: “Trash” can’t be opened right now because it’s being used by another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash. Try again when the current task is complete. i can't seem to find out the source of this problem. what can i do to fix this? thankyou...
