Facetime does not work on my Macbook Air - preferences are grayed out. What is wrong?

I have got a reasonably new Macbook Air, and I wanted to start using FaceTime and Photo Booth. Neither recognises the built-in camera. I have spent some time going through FaceTime troubleshooting support. Support suggests that I sign in for FaceTime, but it does not say where (I don't get prompted either). Equally, support suggests that I go to FaceTime / Preferences - however, that is grayed out. What is wrong? M.

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Hey mknapstein,

You mentioned that FaceTime and PhotoBooth do not recognize you built in camera. When troubleshooting issues with the built in iSight camera, the following article provides the best steps:

How to Troubleshoot iSight

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090

In my experience, this issue may be resolved by Step 4:

Reset SMC or PMU

Reset your computer's SMC or PMU, and then check System Profiler again. (SMC reset instructions for iMac G5 (iSight), Intel-based iMacs; PMU reset instructions forMacBook and MacBook Pro.)

You may also want to refer to the following article:
