Auto software update

Just wondering whether there is still no way to know the size of an autoupdate? I have 15 GB bandwidth per month and I am close to the limit, hence the need to know.

Also, please can somebody explain why Apple now want you to sign in to do an update? What does it gain from this inconvenience to the user?

Thanks,

Most updates are available on Apple's support downloads site (http://support.apple.com/downloads), where you can estimate the size of the updates (some through Software Update will be different than the ones listed on the site), but unfortunately Apple so far does not list the size of updates in the App Store. I agree it really should, and you can try sending feedback to hopefully have this be a feature in the future: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
