magic trackpad stuck in left click/click drag

All of a sudden my magic track pad is stuck in left click drag mode. For example, when I move the pointer on my desktop with one finger, it starts selecting my desktop files. It also seems to be interfering with my Bluetooth Keyboard. I have tried pairing and unpairing, re-installing 10.8.3, PRAM etc., all to no avail. I have also tried cleaning the trackpad. Any other suggestions?

A Logitech Mouse with a dongle works just fine.

My generation 1 Magic Trackpad has started having this problem too. After close inspection and some consideration I figured the rubber foot under the left / single-click side of my trackpad is free or flexible enough to get trapped in the edge of the hole it pokes through, preventing the chases it is affixed to from springing back up.

After writing the above I can confirm this. If I click while dragging the trackpad in any direction across the table, the rubber foot/button gets stuck. When I turn it over I can reproduce this when clicking and pulling the foot/button with my finger. I can also see a difference in the gap that appears between the button and the case when clicked, with the other button. I think the left foot/button has become unstuck. Time for a teardown and some glue...

Morning jcabaleiro,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

With the Tap to Click feature on Magic Trackpad, a single tap or double-tap of your finger can act as a click or double-click, without having to physically press on the trackpad.

For more information on this, take a look at this article:

It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause unusual system behavior

Hope this helps,

I have had the same problem with 4 consecutive trackpads. It is not, as the community specialist suggests, a problem with Tap to Click. The issue is that the spring that pushes the trackpad back up after you press is weak. After only a small amount of use the spring will fail to return the trackpad to its normal position, thus the button stays "pressed". The only remedy is to lift the left corner of the track pad slightly off your table to take the weight off the spring to let it return and then place it back on the table.

I've found the trackpad will get stuck like this in several times in a row and then be ok for a while. It seems likely there is a quality/design issue with these trackpads. Mine have been provided by my employer, otherwise I would have stopped at the second failed trackpad.
