Don't use the same account apple. Create one for you.

iMessages only, not text messages as in SMS/MMS.

If you share the same Apple ID for iTunes Store purchases, you can create and use a separate Apple ID for iMessage and FaceTime.

The reason your iMessages are available on both iPhones is because iMessage has been registered/enabled with the same Apple ID on each iPhone. This is by design and intention for someone with an iPhone, iPad, and Mac wanting their iMessages available and kept synced between mutiple devices and computers.

On each device: Settings>Messages>Send/Receive...edit here & just make sure phone number is checked, or that only one person uses the Apple ID. Either that, or you each get separate Apple ID's for iMessage, FaceTime & iCloud. you can continue to use the same ID for iTunes content.
