My Software Update keeps failing, what should I do now?

I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and since few months I haven't been able to do a Software Update. Currently there are 4 Software Updates that I need to do:

- iTunes 11.0.3

- Security Update 2013-001

- Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 15

- Safari 5.1.9 for Snow Leopard

I keep getting an error message saying installation has failed. I went to the Support Downloads website and downloaded the softwares. Tried to install the softwares one by one and received this error message for all 4 of them:

I went to Disk Utility, ran Verify Disk, with a result saying my disk appears to be OK. I went to the Preferences menu in Disk Utility and uncheck the Verify Checksums too. Same error message. I really have no clue what to do to make my Mac runs the Software Update successfully. Any helps would be appreciated. Thanks!

How large is you HD and how much space do you have left?

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.

Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.

Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.

Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.

If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

Hi BabyBoomer, thanks for the reply. I have a 320 G hard disk and still have more than 40 G left.

I tried to boot up from my installation disk but I realized I don't have one since I bought my Macbook Pro from my previous workplace which is also an Apple Premium Reseller. It was my work computer, then when I left the office, I asked to buy the Mac and was approved. But no installation disks were given to me with the purchase.

At first when I ran Verify Disk, I received a message that I should repair my disk using the installation disc. I found the article from this website (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417), I followed the instructions on that page. Tried Safe Boot, didn't work. Couldn't try using installation disc since I have none, so I proceeded with using fsck. I did and my first result given from running fsck was ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****. I reran the fsck and this second time, I received ** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK. I thought that should do it. I rebooted my Mac, went to Disk Utility again and ran the Verify Disk one more time, no more errors and it says my disk appears to be OK. Made sure the verify checksum checkbox in the Disk Utility Preference is still unchecked. I ran the Software Updates again, failed. Downloaded the files one by one, tried to install them, failed too.

Should I run Repair Disk Permissions as well?

FYI, just got home and ran Repair Disk Permissions. Sigh... Still failed. Still the same error message. Would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Open Console (Applications/Utilities, or type it into Spotlight) & in left pane, scroll down to find Install.log...

there may be a series of error messages at the time your updates failed.

it looks as if you downloaded this one directly from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573 yes?

Does the SHA1 shown there match your copy ?

No it does not! The one I have is 4f1116f6847dda642b67dbc929b9bcf098ceb6a5. The one from the URL download is 56a950f7a89f2a1c39de01b2b1998986f132be57. Is this what caused the problem?

But running the Software Updates also gave me failures as well.

Yes, quite likely...

Software Update does a similar check on downloads & presumably also gets an unsatisfactory result.

Try the download in Safe mode, if possible, and/or uninstall any security/anti virus software, or depending on your computer, try downloading using a different connection.

I'm writing from Safe Mode. I downloaded the softwares again, ran them but still the same error message. I have no security/anti virus software installed. I can try to download from different network tomorrow.

Ok, I'm presuming that the SHA1 was wrong again on a directly downloaded DMG too - something seems to be altering/corrupting them.

& if there's access to another computer, either at the other connection or home - download an update that can be transferred to your mac & the same check made... if the SHA1 is correct, see if it installs.

Hey! Sorry for the late reply. I just connected my MacBook to another connection and dowloaded the software updates again. Everything ran smoothly without any issues. I have all the updates installed now. I still don't get it why switching to another connection solved this problem. The other connection is basically a 3G hostpot from my iPhone. But anyway, all is good now. Thanks for the help!
