iTunes up next listing same song indefinitely

Today I wanted to listen to music on my laptop while doing the xword but couldn't get a playlist to play, iTunes seems to decide what it wants me to hear. Tried getting the up next box to play what i want & discovered eventually it will only repeat the same song....like it's stuck somehow. Help, please? Thanks.
