I have a late 2012 imac - 3.4 i7 16 gig ram and yet when using photoshop elements 9 it keeps freezing with a message saying not enough ram. Another problem which may or may not be related is MS word tending to freeze when I cut and paste??

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much free RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
total activities using 11 gig - photoshop using no more than 2
Free gb is 4.70

Active 4.12
inactive 5.64
2.5 tera free for hd!
I have allocated 3.2 gigs to photoshop. Something called kernal_task using 1.23. No pageouts
Do you have Virtual Memory set for Photoshop?
I don't know!? Can you explain what this is and how I find out?

Well, I use PSE 11 and at least in my version I would recommend, as Adobe does, that you go into Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor>Preferences>Performance>and there I would set your RAM allocation ("Memory Useage" as they call it ) to at least around 12 GB while you are using PSE. It is heavily dependent on the amount of RAM it has available:

Thanks but PSE 9 can only be adjusted to have up to 3.1 GB. Maybe it's time to upgrade!
Seems like it, can't find the OSX specs, but seems it's PSE's 32 bit limitation...
